I got an opportunity to serve along with CERT&#8217;s international team to work to support efforts of this growing African nation in building a secure Internet.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-381\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0017-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0017-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0017-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0017-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The travel began with our flight into Abidjan, the economic capital of Cote d\u2019Ivoire . On Sunday, a short exploration into the local market \u201cAkwaba\u201d (meaning welcome in twi a local African language) helped me find local crafts and some beautiful artwork for both C\u00f4te d&#8217;Ivoire and neighboring countries like Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>I also got to travel into Grand Bassam beach and enjoy some local snacks like &#8220;Coco Rapi&#8221; sold by young entrepreneurs, like this energetic girl in the picture.\u00a0 The beach was packed with people and many skillful kids playing soccer in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0018.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-382 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0018-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0018-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0018-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_0018-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>sand.\u00a0 The weather was still pleasant and not too hot or humid as we walked around and try to catch the local vibe and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Our work week started with a very cordial invitation and a commencement ceremony from some very important officials in Cote D\u2019Ivoire ministry of telecommunications. The hospitality and enthusiasm shown by the team was truly inspiring.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Invory-coast-panel.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-383\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Invory-coast-panel-300x152.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Invory-coast-panel-300x152.png 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Invory-coast-panel-768x389.png 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Invory-coast-panel-1024x519.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Most of the work week involved group discussions\u00a0 and working sessions on the topic of DDOS p<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">revention and Botnets.\u00a0 I was surprised by the long introduction and the support\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">from both the US and Ivory Coast personnel for our work and the amount of organizing that was done ahead of our visit to get an active team together.\u00a0 Picture courtesy of Angel along with Angel Hueca and Justin Novak my colleagues at CERT.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>By Wednesday it was time to enjoy dining at a local restaurant some influenced local cuisine and a local &#8220;enjailler&#8221; (enjoy) and\u00a0<i>Bl\u00e8 bl\u00e8\u00a0<\/i>(sit, calm down, small talk).\u00a0 I enjoyed the local &#8220;fisherman&#8217;s bowl&#8221; along with Kedjenou (seasoned meat with vegetables) and Alloco (fried plantains).\u00a0 Although the next day was a bit of a drag as my stomach tried to adjust to all the local flavors!<\/p>\n<p>T<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3291-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-386 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3291-2-242x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3291-2-242x300.jpg 242w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3291-2-768x954.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3291-2-825x1024.jpg 825w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 242px) 100vw, 242px\" \/><\/a>he last two days proved to be more exciting than I expected.\u00a0 Along with the translators we got very involved in filling up a number of post-it boards with ideas and innovative work that will impact the Internet usage in the fast developing Ivory Coast Internet economy.<\/p>\n<p>I totally enjoyed the enthusiasm of the group and all the fun questions, even the ones that were a bit lost in translation.\u00a0 The setup proved to be very effective ways for us to exchange information and serve larger needs and long-term goals of Ivory Coast.<\/p>\n<p>It was time to say goodbye while getting the last chance to stop at a local mall where I could not resist buying a mango<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-387 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3305-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3305-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3305-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/IMG_3305-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>milkshake powder, only to find out it was actually made in Lebanon! All this experience of local travel was faciliated by an excellent driver we had called Abou!
