{"id":403,"date":"2018-08-06T23:10:10","date_gmt":"2018-08-06T23:10:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/?p=403"},"modified":"2018-08-07T01:02:24","modified_gmt":"2018-08-07T01:02:24","slug":"one-morning-in-maine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/2018\/08\/one-morning-in-maine\/","title":{"rendered":"One Morning in Maine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To end our 2018 summer with something adventurous, Erica asked to visit Maine before our first son Rajiv heads off to college.\u00a0 Little did we know we will be experiencing a slice of quaint everyday life in Maine portrayed in children&#8217;s picture books by\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_McCloskey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert McCloskey<\/a>. &#8211; both <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/One_Morning_in_Maine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">One Morning in Maine<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blueberries_for_Sal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Blueberries for Sal<\/a> . Erica had read these books to our kids so many times, she picked them back up after we got home to review its\u00a0picturesque beauty.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Our family packed our bags for a work week in Maine on Monday July 30th and headed off in a comfortable hour and half flight to Bangor.\u00a0 I was trying to surprise the kids and family with first class flight-ticket and a comfortable rental van &#8211; Erica hates flying and kids hate sitting in a rental car. The journey went well as we ended up in a beautiful house on the Mt. Desert Narrows in South Hancock, Maine.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DSC_2289.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-405\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DSC_2289-1024x740.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"434\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DSC_2289-1024x740.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DSC_2289-300x217.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/DSC_2289-768x555.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 601px) 100vw, 601px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Our airbnb house in South Hancock, Maine<\/p>\n<p>Our first day&#8217;s adventure started with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainestatekayak.com\/tours\/half-day-tour\/\">nature tour on kayaks<\/a>\u00a0along the Pretty Marsh Harbor watching seals,<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0039.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-410 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0039-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0039-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0039-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0039-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a> osprey (fish hawk), a bald eagle, several cormorants and seagulls.\u00a0 This was all just as written in McCloskey&#8217;s book. The views\u00a0 of several islands, bays and rocks that get revealed only on low tide were all spectacular.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0038.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-413 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0038-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0038-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0038-768x513.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0038-1024x684.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0038.jpg 1774w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We finished our first day of adventure with a treat-filled dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/ruthandwimpys.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ruth and Wimpys<\/a>.\u00a0 Of course one had to eat Maine&#8217;s lobster fresh at a local restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The next day was our day set aside for hiking in Bar Harbor.\u00a0 There were so many choices of good trails and we picked Dorr Mountain trail and specifically<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-415\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0033-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0033-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0033-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0033-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>the ladder trail to climb up Dorr Mountain.\u00a0 It provided some fascinating views along the way and a cardiovascular test uphill and muscle test downhill for all of us.<\/p>\n<p>Our Airbnb house was tucked right in between Schoodic Peninsula and Bar Harbor.\u00a0 This made it possible to get to Shoodic Point and do an easier trail starting at Blueberry Hill &#8211; another quaint memory from McCormick.\u00a0 This offered some spectacular views in spite of last night&#8217;s fog and rain.\u00a0 The air was just healing and the world seems to be moving just a bit slower in Maine.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0029.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-416 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.sarvepalli.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0029.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2049\" height=\"1537\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0029.jpg 2049w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0029-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0029-768x576.jpg 768w, http:\/\/ericavijay.net\/story\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/IMG_0029-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Schoodic point in Acadia National Park, Maine<\/p>\n<p>The journey back proved to be an unexpected turn and twist.\u00a0 Our flight from Bangor Maine was cancelled due to bad weather leaving us with many poor options &#8211; thanks to American Airlines.\u00a0 They even suggested that five of us is just too many people to be able to put on a flight together back to DC. Well so much for &#8220;the friendly skies&#8221; from AA.\u00a0 The locals from Maine were very helpful in getting us a comfortable rental SUV to drive back\u00a0 to DC.\u00a0 Crossing 9 states in 12-hours we amazingly made it safe, with only a few pit stops and quick drive-through dining.\u00a0 We made it home driving even past the big apple and Manhattan on back roads to avoid I-95 as much as possible.
